Finding the correct HP laptop replacement battery
There are a few different ways to identify the HP Notebook battery that you need. The simplest way is if you have access to the laptop and can remove the battery. An HP laptop battery will normally have the part number (the spares or SPS number) on them, searching this number will allow you to find an identical or equivalent HP battery replacement.
If you do not have access to the laptop or are not able to remove the battery to find the HP spare battery part number, the next step is to consult the machine’s documentation and manuals. This can be either paper manuals that came with the machine or online documentation, which can be found on HP’s website. In order to do this you will need the model number of the machine and preferably the serial number.
If you are still unable to find which HP replacement battery is required you can contact HP directly who will be able to assist.
Am I able to fit the HP battery replacement myself?
Yes it is possible to do so. The difficulty of the HP laptop battery replacement will vary depending on the HP laptop model. Some models will just require a catch to be released to remove the old battery then the new battery can be slotted into place.
Some batteries however are internal on the laptop. You will need to remove the base in order to fit the new HP laptop battery. It is important to note that any work undertaken incorrectly can risk damaging the machine.
What are the signs that I may need a new HP laptop battery?
Batteries degrade over time and one of the most common signs of this is reduced battery life. If the battery allows you to use the laptop for considerably less time than it might be time to get a new HP laptop battery.
When it comes to monitoring the health of the laptop battery HP laptops often come with diagnostic software that will alert you if the battery’s health drops too low.
If you notice any physical damage to the battery it is important to stop using it immediately. It can be a safety hazard as well as possibly damaging the laptop itself with continued use. This can be for example due to the machine being dropped or otherwise taking a knock.
How can I preserve power when my laptop is running off the battery?
There are a few steps you can take to make the charge of your HP battery last longer.
Reduce the amount of applications running. If something is not being used it is better to close it. Some applications such as graphics and video editing software as well as games are particularly heavy in terms of battery use.
Performance settings in Windows can help preserve battery life. This includes changing performance mode to battery saver and reducing screen brightness. It is useful to change your power settings to turn off the screen and similar when the machine is not in use to further save
battery life.
If possible do not operate your laptop in extremely warm temperatures. As well as affecting the ability of the laptop itself to cool itself when running, it can degrade the battery and shorten its usage time and lifespan.
I want to keep a spare HP replacement battery. How should I store it?
Ideally it is best to store the battery in a cool, dry place. Very low or very high temperatures can damage the cells. Do not discharge the battery completely, instead before storage charge the battery to around 50-70% of its capacity. Storing the battery with no charge can damage the HP laptop battery’s cells.
What is the difference between the main battery and CMOS battery for HP laptops?
The main battery provides power to the laptop. Like all lithium ion batteries your HP laptop battery will needed to be replaced after around 3-4 years depending on usage and its charge capacity drops.
A CMOS battery is the small coin battery used by the laptop to store information such as the BIOS settings and system time. This normally needs to be replaced less frequently than the main HP battery, often lasting for several years.
What are the advantages of buying a genuine HP laptop battery?
Unlike hard drives and memory there are no standardised sizes and connectors for batteries so one for another machine will not fit or work with your laptop. It is however possible to buy batteries manufactured by a third party for your machine.
These batteries can vary greatly in quality and as such we would always recommend buying a genuine HP laptop battery to ensure the replacement is of the same quality and has the same lifespan as the original.
I have bought an HP replacement battery but it is not charging, what can I check?
If a new HP laptop battery isn’t charging there can be a number of reasons unrelated to the battery itself.
The AC adapter or power cable for the laptop may not be providing power. If you have a different AC adapter or cable, try using these instead to see if it resolves the problem. Similarly, there may be a fault with the charging port on the laptop, it may be faulty of loose, preventing the machine being charged.
There also could be a fault with the system board in the laptop itself, with its charging circuit which is preventing the AC adapter charging the machine or power reaching the HP Laptop battery. It is also worth physically checking the battery connector on the machine (where the battery plugs in) for any damage.
