A SCSI drive (small computer system interface) is a drive that is typically used on servers or workstations. Although in comparison to other drives it doesn’t have much space ranging from 36GB to 146GB. Even though its capacity is smaller than most other drives it makes up for it with its speed, reaching speeds of 15,000 rotations per minute. This means that it will access files with much more speed. To put into perspective an average home computer reaches speeds of 5400-7200 RPM.
As for a SAS (serial attached SCSI) is a drive that is more suited for critical applications that need to be run even quicker, fundamentally making it a better SCSI. They are also more versatile as they have thinner cables and are easier to link with SATA drives. They also can come in 2.5” form factors instead of only being 3.5” your average SCSI. Another advantage to a SCSI drive is that it can come in larger capacities than SCSI hard drives, reaching 600GB of storage and more.
So if you need a fast and reliable drive in your workstation or server then a SCSI will fulfil its duty perfectly although it won’t have the largest amount of storage available. If you are ready to pay more or require a drive for more mission-critical applications then the SAS drive is for you as it can reach higher speeds whilst also being more applicable for different situations.
