Finding the right laptop battery

The easiest way to find the correct laptop battery for your machine is to check the part number written on it. Thankfully laptop battery replacement and removal is relatively easy at least in the case of external batteries and usually just involves releasing 1 or 2 catches near the battery.

When you have removed the laptop battery the part number is normally found on the base. Different manufacturers have different ways of labelling their part numbers. On Lenovo laptop batteries the number you need is labelled FRU (field replacement units), on HP batteries it is labelled as SPS. If you have a Dell laptop battery pack there will be a long serial number on the back starting with 2 characters then a dash, followed by 6 digits that start with a 0, it is the 5 digits after this 0 that are the part number.

If you are unable to identify the battery you need feel free to contact us and we will do our best to assist you. If possible please have the model and serial of the laptop to hand as this makes the search far easier.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I replace my laptop battery?

Whilst in most cases laptop batteries can be replaced, the difficulty of the replacement can vary. On a lot of machines a laptop battery replacement will simply involve releasing a catch on the base of the machine to release the old battery before putting the new one in place. However some batteries are classed as customer non replaceable and are contained inside the machine, replacing these may require professional assistance.

How do I know when it’s time to replace my laptop battery?

Reduced battery life: Lithium Ion laptop batteries degrade over time and once a battery holds noticeably less charge it may be time to replace it.

Warning messages: many laptops will display warning messages related to battery health. If you start to see this frequently it may be time to consider a replacement battery.

Damage to the battery: A physically damaged laptop battery can be a safety hazard as well as potentially damaging the laptop. If your battery suffers damage for example as the result of a knock then it is important to replace it immediately.

What should I do if my laptop battery is swollen or leaking?

If a battery is swollen or leaking it is important to stop using the laptop immediately. Leaking laptop batteries are a safety hazard and should be handled with care.

When removing the battery from the laptop, first turn off the machine and disconnect the power. If available safety gloves and goggles are recommended.

Can I overcharge my laptop battery?

As long as the correct adapter is used modern lithium-Ion laptop batteries will not overcharge. Once the battery reaches 100% it will not charge further until the voltage drops back below a certain level.

However it is important to consider that leaving your laptop plugged in all the time and the battery at 100% charge can reduce the lifespan of the battery.

How do I store my laptop battery if I won’t be using it for a while?

It is best to store the battery in a cool, dry place. Extremely high or low temperatures can damage the cells. Before storing charge the battery to around 50-70% of its capacity. This will help to prevent the battery from discharging entirely as this can damage the cells.

Why does my laptop battery drain quickly?

This could be down to a combination of several things-

Battery age: laptop batteries lose their ability to hold a charge over time. If the battery is several years old it may be time for a replacement.

Power hungry apps: some applications will require more battery power than others for example graphically intensive games. Multiple applications running simultaneously including those running in the background will also drain laptop battery power faster.

Performance and screen brightness settings: Whilst high performance settings on a laptop often allow applications to perform better and run faster, they also cause it to consume more power. Consider switching to balanced or battery saver modes instead. Likewise higher screen brightness uses more power so this can be lowered to prolong battery usage.

Can I use a different brand of battery in my laptop?

There are no standardised battery sizes so batteries from another brand will not fit into your machine. Laptop battery sizes and specifications will also vary among laptop models produced by the same manufacturer.

It is however possible to buy replacement batteries from third party manufacturers rather than the original laptop brand. These are often cheaper and can be available after official support for the machine has discontinued. However the quality of these batteries can vary greatly and for this reason we would always recommend buying manufacturers’ genuine replacement batteries.

Why is my laptop battery not charging?

There can be a number of reasons your laptop battery isn’t charging:

Make sure the adapter and cable are actually plugged in. It can be easy to accidently not plug the plug all the way into the socket or for the power cable to partially come out of the AC adapter,

Your AC adapter or power cable may be faulty. If have them available you can try charging the laptop battery using a different adapter and power cable to see if the issue is resolved.

The battery may be at the end of its lifespan. Laptop batteries lose their ability to charge with time and may need to be replaced.

The charging port on the laptop may be loose or damaged. This can prevent the cable from the AC adapter making a proper connection with the laptop, preventing the battery from being charged.

Some laptop models limit the maximum charge of a battery in order to extend its life. This can often be toggled  or adjusted. Please refer to the laptop manufacturers documentation for more information.

How can I extend the life of my laptop battery?

Reduce power usage. Laptop batteries are designed to last for a certain amount of charge cycles. A charge cycle represents one full discharge from 100% to 0%, which a partial discharge being a fraction of a cycle. Using power saving features of your operating system and apps can reduce the amount of cycles being used and prolong the battery’s life.

Avoid hot temperatures. High temperatures can put additional strain on a battery, shortening its life and in some cases even damaging it. Make sure to keep your laptop out of the sun or other places it may get hot and make sure cooling vents on the machine are kept unobstructed.
